Tari Cerana is the iconic welcoming dance of Kupang, the capital of East Nusa Tenggara. Female dancers in ornate traditional Timor dress carry cerana boxes — elegant containers holding betel nut, areca, and lime, which are the traditional offerings of hospitality in Timorese culture. The dance is performed to greet honored guests at official state events, cultural ceremonies, and major public gatherings, symbolizing warmth, respect, and openness.
The graceful movements of Tari Cerana mirror the gentle rhythms of Timorese daily life — slow, deliberate, and full of dignity. Every gesture communicates the host community's intention to share their best with visitors. The offering of the betel nut set (sirih pinang) at the end of the dance is a deeply symbolic act: accepting it means accepting the friendship and protection of the community. Tari Cerana gained national prominence when it was performed at the 2023 ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, showcasing NTT's cultural richness to world leaders.
